This blog is dedicated to the sublime instruments called nose flutes and which produce the most divine sound ever. We have chosen to discard all the native models from S. Pacific and Asia, for they need fingering to be played. We'll concentrate on "buccal cavity driven" nose flutes : the well patented and trademarked metal or plastic ones, plus, by a condemnable indulgence, some wooden craft or home-made productions.

Vintage ad from Brazil

Here is a vintage ad or catalog clip, related to the « No. 25 », id est the metal nose bird call handcrafted by the Fábrica de Pios de Aves "Maurilio Coelho". Look how the whistler (Mr. Coelho Jr.?) hold the nose flute with such an elegant gesture!

  1. Do you know from which year this advertisement is? If this really is an old ad, from the 1950s by the look of things, would the original 'pio de nariz' have been made to a higher standard than the ones made currently?

Who can tell me why out of all these wooden bird calls in the series, this is the only one made from metal, moreover so unfinished and badly made compared to the others in the case?

It clearly already is part of the batch, as it is called 'no.25'. Has it simply been added at a later stage, being the last in the series of bird calls?

Is the product model holding the Coelho so gently because he doesn't want to cut his face with this crudely made flute? Or does he simply not know how to play it?

  2. I do not know the year, but yes, it's an "original ad, and yes, probably from the 50-60s. I have no clue about the quality of the ones made by Mr. Coelho Sr, nor by Mr. Coelho Jr., and just k,ow the ones from the 3rd generation of Mr. Coelhos.

They all are called #1, #2, ...etc. They sell boxes with the exact number of cases for one of each, including the #25.

hahaha! Maybe is he afraid, yes :)
